Itraconazole inhibits the fungal enzyme cytochrome P450 14?-demethylase. This enzyme is responsible for creating ergosterol, a vital component of the fungal cell membrane. Without ergosterol, the fungal cell membrane becomes "leaky," causing the internal contents to spill out and the fungus to die.

Common: Nausea, abdominal pain, headache, and dizziness. Gastrointestinal: Constipation or diarrhea. Metabolic: Rare cases of liver enzyme elevation. Serious: Swelling (edema), congestive heart failure (rarely, in predisposed patients), or severe skin rashes.
