Norfloxacin 400mg Tablets IP
Uses of Norfloxacin 400mg Tablets IP

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Both complicated and uncomplicated infections of the bladder and kidneys. Prostatitis: Bacterial infection of the prostate gland. Gastrointestinal Infections: Severe traveler's diarrhea or stomach infections like Shigellosis. Gonorrhea: Though less common now due to resistance, it was traditionally used for certain STIs.

How Norfloxacin 400mg Tablets IP Works

It is a "bactericidal" medication, meaning it kills bacteria directly. It works by inhibiting an enzyme called DNA gyrase. Without this enzyme, the bacteria cannot untangle, repair, or replicate their DNA. This causes the bacterial cells to stop growing and eventually rupture.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Norfloxacin 400mg Tablets IP
Can I take Norfloxacin for a common cold or flu?

No. Norfloxacin is an antibiotic and only works against bacteria. It has no effect on viruses, which cause the common cold and flu.

Why must I drink plenty of water while taking this?

Norfloxacin can cause 'crystalluria' (crystals forming in the urine). Drinking 1.5 to 2 liters of water daily helps flush the kidneys and prevents this.

Can I take this with my morning glass of milk?

No. Calcium-rich foods like milk, yogurt, or calcium supplements interfere with the absorption of Norfloxacin, making it less effective. Take it 1 hour before or 2 hours after dairy.

Does it cause sun sensitivity?

Yes. While on Norfloxacin, your skin may burn very easily. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when going outdoors.

What is the 'Black Box' warning for this drug?

The FDA has a warning for fluoroquinolones regarding the risk of tendonitis and tendon rupture, especially in patients over 60 or those taking steroids.

Can I stop taking it once my UTI symptoms disappear?

No. You must finish the entire course. Stopping early allows the remaining bacteria to survive and develop resistance, making future infections harder to treat.

Does it interact with caffeine?

Yes. Norfloxacin can increase the effects of caffeine, making you feel extra jittery, anxious, or causing a racing heart.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

It is generally avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding because it may interfere with the joint and bone development of the baby.

Can I take antacids with Norfloxacin?

No. Antacids containing magnesium or aluminum can bind to the medicine and prevent it from being absorbed. Wait at least 2 hours between doses.

What should I do if I experience joint pain?

Stop taking the medication and avoid physical exercise. Contact your doctor immediately, as joint or tendon pain can be an early sign of tendon damage.
