Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Rifaximin 550 mgTablets IP
Will Rifaximin treat a urinary tract infection or a sore throat?

No. Rifaximin is not absorbed into the blood, so it cannot reach the bladder or throat. It only works on infections within the gastrointestinal tract.

Does it cause a yeast infection like other antibiotics?

The risk is much lower because it stays in the gut and doesn't affect the bacteria in other parts of the body, though it is not impossible.

Can I take it with or without food?

Yes, Rifaximin can be taken with or without food.

Why is it prescribed for liver disease?

In liver failure, the liver can't clear ammonia. Rifaximin kills the bacteria in the gut that produce ammonia, preventing it from reaching the brain.

How long does a typical course last?

For Traveler's Diarrhea, it is usually 3 days; for IBS-D, it is typically 14 days; for liver disease, it may be taken long-term.

Can I stop taking it as soon as I feel better?

No. You should complete the full course prescribed by your doctor to prevent the bacteria from becoming resistant to the antibiotic.

Does it cause sun sensitivity?

No, unlike some other antibiotics, Rifaximin is not known to cause photosensitivity.

Is it safe for children?

It is generally approved for children 12 years and older for Traveler's Diarrhea, but use in younger children must be strictly directed by a pediatrician.

What should I do if my diarrhea gets worse or I see blood?

Stop the medication and contact your doctor immediately, as this could be a sign of a more serious infection or a different type of bacteria.

Can I drink alcohol while taking Rifaximin?

There is no direct interaction, but alcohol can irritate the gut and worsen symptoms of IBS or liver disease, so it is best to avoid it.
